serena malyon illustration art book cover red coat georgian ireland

My lastest illustration. Even though it was started before I went to England and Ireland, a lot of the outcome was inspired by what I saw on my trip. I loved the countryside of Ireland, the rugged boggy landscape interspersed with green fields and trees climbing with ivy. And in England I spent everyday in museums, staring in awe at masterpiece after masterpiece learning a lot. I’ll have more to show soon!

So here’s the goliath painting I’ve been working on for a while now. I recently read A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin (which I’m sure everyone knows is amazing), and I found it absolutely inspiring. I’m a fan of the show, but one chapter that was omitted/changed was Bran Stark’s dream. In the book it was described beautifully, and I wanted to try my hand at painting quite an abstract scene. Hardcore book fans will spot everything I left out, I just wanted to capture the essence of the dream.

This one is based on the folk song “Bonnie House of Airlie” (I only know the Kate Rusby version). This was done this afternoon in about 2 hours. It started out as a sketch and just kind of evolved into something a bit fantastical. Can you tell I’m in love with this colour palette?

Isn’t it funny how you can slave over a piece for days and it turns out terribly… then you doodle for a couple of hours and come out with something you adore?
